Commissioned by Huddersfield Seventh-day Adventist Church and delivered in partnership with Kirklees Local TV (KLTV), the Windrush tapestry brings together decades of African Caribbean history through a unique combination of visual storytelling, photography, oral histories and digital archives.
Celebrating the enduring legacy and contributions of the Windrush generation across Kirklees, the project shares a striking 6m x 2.28m travelling photographic and digital tapestry, co-produced with local artists, church members, and the wider community.
The artwork showcases Huddersfield’s Windrush heritage and highlights contributions across a range of sectors, including the NHS, transport, education, community activism, textiles, politics, heritage, culture, sport, and faith.
More than a traditional exhibition, Windrush on Tour combines physical and digital storytelling. Through QR-code-linked oral histories, the project will create a lasting online archive of authentic migration experiences, preserving personal stories for future generations.
Following its exhibition here, the completed tapestry will tour at least seven venues across Kirklees, including schools, colleges, libraries, and the University of Huddersfield.
