THINK GIGS: Prison(er)s 'r' us

  • Cafe Ollo 7 Northumberland Street Huddersfield, England, HD1 1RL United Kingdom (map)

The way we treat our prisoners says a lot about the kind of society we are. Crime, its causes and consequences, challenges us to have a better understanding of what underlies offending behaviour. Incarceration as a solution to crime has little evidence of success & although criminal justice & psychoanalysis aren’t easy bedfellows, applying psychoanalytically informed ideas to the management & treatment of high risk offenders offers more hope of rehabilitation.

Nick Benefield will lay out a framework for understanding human development & explore the changes needed to break the cycle of offending. Trained as a social worker & Jungian Analyst, Nick has worked in both the public & voluntary sector, as Head of the National Personality Disorder Programme for the Department of Health & joint head of the NHS/HMPPS Offender Disorder Pathway Programme.

Erica Mulkern and Jonas Lapinas will respond to the talk through a one-off collaborative improvisation. Erica is a professional dancer, teacher, choreographer & mentor who trained at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. Jonas creates a wide range of music & on this occasion he’ll perform an atmospheric ambient improvisation.
