Want to do something practical to improve our local democracy? Join Democracy Club’s volunteers to help gather and publish better information about who you can vote for.
Let’s get together to help voters!
There are local elections across England and Northern Ireland on 2 May 2019. We all need to know who we can vote for. But it’s not always easy to find out about your candidates.
At this event, we'll be taking candidate lists that councils publish (usually these are PDF documents) and turning this information into useful data that anyone can use. The information that we gather during the event will then be available to voters via a website called Who Can I Vote For? – and will be shared via many other websites and apps.
Democracy Club is an independent, non-partisan network of volunteers, co-ordinated by a small core team. We crowdsource information about candidates, such as statements about what they stand for, photographs and social media links, along with current information about polling stations. All of this helps voters to make more informed choices and to use their vote.
How to take part
You don’t need any technical knowledge or experience to take part, just a laptop. The task is easy, and our volunteers will be there to help. What makes it challenging is the vast amount of information. Thousands of candidates will be standing in the UK local elections. But with volunteers like you around the country pitching in to help, we can make a real difference for voters in double-quick time.
This is something simple and practical that we can all do to help improve our democracy. We hope you’ll come along and get involved.
Please bring your laptop. You might also like to sign up for an account at candidates.democracyclub.org.uk before the event, but it's not essential (we can sign you up at the event, so long as you can access your emails from your laptop, or you can sign in via social media).
The event is in Cafe Ollo at the Media Centre and we’ll provide drinks and snacks.
You can stay for the whole session or drop in whenever you can. You’re welcome to arrive any time after 5.30pm, and we’ll get started at 6pm.
